In May 2022, alert enforcement officers uncovered 15 kilograms of rhino horn ingeniously concealed inside a consignment of pineapples prepared for transit. The concealment method underscored how far traffickers will go to defeat routine inspection — and how essential trained, intelligence-supported screening has become.
The suspect was arrested on the spot and prosecuted under the Uganda Wildlife Act, 2019. Rhino horn ranks among the most valuable illegal wildlife commodities in the world, and Uganda is determined not to serve as a transit corridor for it.
The court convicted the offender and imposed a fine of UGX 120 million, with the horn forfeited to the state. The case is cited by the Task Force as proof that concealment no longer guarantees impunity.
